Weekly Spotlight

It’s that time of year again. Benefits season. The time when your inbox starts filling up and you suddenly realize you have to make big decisions about healthcare while also remembering your password to the enrollment portal. For anyone taking GLP-1 medication or thinking about starting one, this is the season to pay extra attention.

Not all insurance plans treat GLP-1s the same. Some happily cover them for type 2 diabetes, but slam the brakes if you are using them for weight management. Others might cover them but only if your doctor fills out extra paperwork and proves you really need it. And yes, there are plans that simply say “nope” even if you have been on the medication for months.

Here is the homework no one asked for but will save you later. Look at the prescription drug list, also called the formulary. See if your medication is on it and what hoops you may need to jump through. This is not the fun kind of scavenger hunt, but it beats finding out in January that your pharmacy bill is now the size of your mortgage payment.

And if you are not sure, pick up the phone. Call your insurance provider or HR benefits team and ask about coverage, co-pays, and prior authorizations. A quick conversation now can help you avoid some nasty surprises later. Think of it as future-you sending you a thank you note for keeping their GLP-1 journey a little less stressful.

Tips, Tricks & Side Effect Hacks

Tip: Tiny Plate, Big Difference

One of the simplest (and sneakiest) hacks for eating less without even noticing is switching to smaller plates and bowls (or just using your 6-year old’s plates). It sounds almost too simple, but portion perception plays a huge role when you’re on GLP-1s and trying to adjust to new hunger cues.

Why it works:

  • Visual trick: A full small plate looks more satisfying than a half-empty big one.

  • Built-in portion control: Smaller plates naturally help you serve less without feeling deprived.

  • Supports new appetite cues: Since GLP-1s already reduce appetite, smaller portions match your new hunger levels.

  • Less food waste: You’re less likely to over-serve and toss leftovers.

  • Mindful eating reminder: It creates a natural pause. You can always go back for more if you’re truly hungry.
